Waterproofing systems
Waterproof Membrane
A thin waterproof, breathable membrane, typically ePTFE or polyurethane, built into a bootie or laminated behind the upper. The membrane blocks liquid meltwater from entering while letting foot moisture vapor escape, the core of a fully waterproof snow boot.
Also known as: Breathable membrane, bootie membrane, ePTFE or PU laminate, waterproof-breathable liner
Typical properties

- Integration with insulation for warm, dry builds
Strengths
Pros
- Delivers true waterproof performance, not just water resistance
- Breathable, reducing internal condensation
- Pairs with any upper material for design freedom
- A strong, verifiable selling point for wet-winter markets
Trade-offs
Cons
- Adds material and labor cost versus DWR alone
- Waterproofing fails if seams are not sealed correctly
- Breathability and durability vary by membrane grade
Where it fits
Typical applications
- Waterproof snow boots for wet, rainy winter climates
